Basketball

Basketball

The basketball community at Churchie is an enthusiastic group of boys, staff and parents who are involved in every level of basketball from playing in Great Public Schools Association of Queensland (GPS) and Viking Club basketball to coaching, fundraising, scoring and refereeing.

Basketball is supported by the Basketball Support Group (BSG), which is a large group of parents interested in maintaining our wonderful programme. They assist in the smooth running of the GPS basketball season, functions and the Viking club basketball competition.

A Churchie basketballer’s journey begins with the Churchie Hoops programme, which is a basketball development programme available for Churchie boys in Years 1 to 6. This programme is designed to introduce students to the benefits of basketball at Churchie and has had a significant impact on Prep School boys’ skills, athletic potential and sporting development. Churchie boys then have the opportunity to engage in the Vikings club basketball programme and explore their interest in basketball, with over 30 teams from Years 1 to 12 competing in the Southern District Spartan Basketball Association (SBDA).

GPS Basketball

All GPS teams train and prepare throughout Term 2 in the SDSBA, with GPS basketball played for Years 5 to 12 in Term 3. Churchie fields teams at all levels in the GPS competition, with fierce competition for places. The GPS basketball competition is the pinnacle of schoolboy basketball in Queensland with the GPS boasting much of Queensland’s elite basketball talent.

Many Churchie boys’ basketball journeys finish with a Churchie premier sporting tour: a three-week tour of basketball’s birthplace, the USA. The USA tour is run every two years and is available to all Churchie GPS basketballers from Years 10 to 12. Click here to find out more about the USA tour.

Of all the GPS schools, Churchie has the largest and most successful programme. Churchie continues to be the number one school in the competition, with all teams gathering a record number of wins.

With multiple state and national players as well as Old Boys in US colleges and professional leagues around the world, Churchie Basketball is unquestionably the first choice for elite basketballers in Queensland. Basketball at Churchie is thriving and continues to be one of Churchie’s most successful sporting programmes.

Our basketball programme incorporates the four tenets of Churchie. All boys are encouraged and supported in improving all aspects of basketball technically, tactically, mentally, physically and as a team. As one of the premier school basketball programmes in Australia, the Churchie Basketball programme encompasses every aspect of a player’s basketball development including junior after school basketball, individual academy, strength and conditioning, professional coaching, speed and agility, national and international camps and tours, US college recruiting, Vikings club basketball, GPS basketball teams and more.
